Common Projects is a collaboration between designers Flavio Girolami and Prathan Poopat. Inspired by architectures found in everyday objects, each product is infused with tailored approach using the finest materials and processes.

This interview with Peter Poopat from Common Projects on the TRES BIEN blog is worth a read.

At first, “We just wanted to make shoes for ourselves and our girls.” Peter smiles. The first samples came in during men’s market week in New York. Peter and Flavio showed them to some friends and all of a sudden orders were coming in. “Steven Alan, Opening Ceremony, Nom de Guerre, and it took off from there.”

Modern British Classics

Ally Capellino's latest collection for 2011 is Artisan inspired and is all about handwork.
Hand cast brass fittings and hand burnished steel marry the hand waxed leathers on their signature frame bags. Whilst heavier leathers have been worked by skilled British craftsmen, Super soft sheep nappas have been hand tie-dyed in India.

Earth tones dominate, punctuated by hand printed circles in vibrant juicy colours, Signature waxed cotton groups are expanded and recoloured.

Here's something i found really interesting when on www.allycapellino.co.uk it basically shows and tells you the history of the company accompanied by illustrations that make it a little fun to read/see.

Without doubt, A.P.C. is one of the most coveted and coolest brands around. Its minimal branding leaving it down to the eye of a specialist to see the delicate and intricate details which offer the wearer a true sense of refined style. An ad campaign is important to every brand, it should be a manifestation of everything you have aimed to achieve in that collection and is your outward projection to the world. A.P.C. have never failed to display the character of their collections, working with some of the most renowned photographers in the world to produce some of the most subtle campaigns around. However, much like the pieces themselves, it takes a trained eye to devour the atmosphere, colours and styling and recognise the class behind them. Here is a little look at some of their campaigns from the past 15 years:

The A.P.C. spring summer campaign from 1996 shot by highly acclaimed photographer and director Ellen von Unwerth, acclaimed for bringing Claudia Schiffer to our attention.

Shot by one of my favourite photographers, Constant Anée, this is the campaign for the autumn winter collection in 2003.
He's worked with everybody from Calvin Klein to Ralph Lauren, but this is shot by Bruce Weber for the autumn winter collection in 2008 featuring Gia Coppola completely captures the spirit of the brand.

Like many before him, and many to come, Terry Richardson is a photographer who has never been far from contraversy, but this doesn't detract from the fact that he has something in his photographs that very few others can represent. This shot is taken from the summer campaign in 2004.
This collection was shot by Valérie Sadoun for the 2008 winter collection. The framing and colours just encapsulate something about continental cinema, like stills from a revitalised Vivre sa Vie. It shares the romanticism of some of the A.P.C.'s winter pieces.
If you ever scan the pages of i-D magazine you're likely to be familiar with Pierre Bailly's work. Here he shoots beautiful French actress and model Lou Doillon for the 2005 winter campaign. The photograph on the left, again featuring Lou Doillon five years earlier is shot by the unmissable Takashi Homma. It's reminds me of photographs of Kathleen Hanna.
I just love this campaign. Its from 1992 and it captures the raw femininity of the brand. Its everything A.P.C. should be about. The gold skirt is a little Spice Girls for my liking, perhaps symptomatic of the times, but I guess we can forgive them this time.

Mark McNairy camel Gibson is a benchmade shoe from the Sanders factory with the McNairy trademark redbrick sole. Perfect shoe for the summer.

So, Han are our latest addition to the store and we present a petit collection of the finest 1950s-inspired Danish eyeglasses. The label was launched in 2008 and has always stood to represent everything we understand about Danish design. The whole focus of their products is around simplicity and craft. All of their spectacles draw from classic silhouettes and each pair of frames is hand-made and hand-painted in Denmark to create timeless items. Everything down to concertina brochure is beautifully designed and crafted. Although still confined to a certain sartorial niche, they offer a great alternative to the specs which will fill the pockets of all your peers. Even Kanye West wears them.

The brand's mission is simple: to produce classic products that give hand-made luxury products at affordable prices. The hand-painted frames finishes that vintage East-Coast look. The boxes they come in are every bit as spectacular and even the little concertina catalogue is beautifully designed, pitching each model from the current collection like a 1950s Lonely Hearts entry.

Paulo Coelho once said: "It's the simple things in life that are the most extraordinary". The arrival of a box with the unmistakable bold text logo of A.P.C. would fill any shopkeeper with excitement. Despite being at odds with the understated nature of a brand that has pioneered simplicity since the brand's inception in 1988 (its older than me!), we agree with Coelho... the simple things make us happy.

In those twenty-three years, A.P.C. have created ready-to-wear pieces of effortless elegance. This has required a expert understanding and precision of material and fit combined with the subtle referencing of military and naval sartorial history. We speak endlessly about "wardrobe essentials" in the world of menswear but A.P.C. produce garments which transcend our understanding of seasonal style in favour of reproducing classic items every year with minor changes to material, fit and detailing. This label really does have Paris at its heart.

Our first drop from A.P.C.'s collection this spring includes all the classics (including a large selection of their esteemed range of denim) expected from the French outfit. We have received a number of classic t-shirts both long and short sleeve in the classic Breton style (it wouldn't be an A.P.C. collection without them), shirts in both long and short sleeve check and denim as well as a few of the best Spring outerwear pieces we've seen in a long while.

We are very much from the school of thought which believes do few things and do them very well. However, Veja, originally a modest ecological shoe producer based in Paris continue to impress us with the expansion of their fair-trade range to bags and laptop sleeves whilst continuing to diversify their footwear collections.

Although they do not explicitly produce collections, there are obviously certain styles and colourways which suit the spring and summer seasons than others. All of their items, categorised by project numbers, follows the same principles as the one before it. Their aim:

1. to use ecological inputs into every product
2. Use only fairtrade cotton and latex
3. Respect the dignity of artisan craftspeople

All of this, whilst cutting out the unnecessary CO2 emissions from the transportation, organization, production, conditioning and consumption of their products (this includes zero air travel. The boats are sent by ship before reaching the port of Le Havre where they are transported by canal barge). They've got as far as to use a green electricity cooperative in their headquarters.

MAKR Carry Goods Delivery

We've spoken widely of our admiration for the work done by MAKR, and what a privileged it is to hold their only account in Europe. They're a brand we believe heavily in and one we are excited to continue working with. As they expand, we welcome new items with every delivery, and they never fail to carry the ergonomic, strong and tactile design that always attracted us to them in the first place.

By utilising existing production sites, and working alongside them throughout the process, MAKR have gone from producers of understated leather wallets to rucksacks via tote bags and key chains. Whilst not everything can be sourced in the UK, they place material quality at the essence of production. If it means sourcing from Italy or Germany, then so be it. The one thing that never changes, is the philosophy that design, manufacture and quality are not mutually exclusive and are integral to the production of high quality good.

Here is a photo of my Horizon Two wallet 5 months into its long life. The indigo staining looks great and the leather has taken on a life of its own whilst absorbing the scratch of my keys as part of the patina of the leather:

When it comes to clean, and timeless clothing there are certain brands who you can turn to every time. A.P.C. are one of those. They just seem to get it. By reworking classic items of clothing they have built a name for themselves that is synonymous with refined, enduring style and high quality production.

Their collections are growing year on year, but despite this, we always stick with the classics. High quality raw denim, seasonal overcoats and classic Breton-inspired tees. How could you go wrong?!

If you' are struck by the post holiday blues, grabbing yourself a bargain may just be the perfect remedy. It looks like Spring Summer 2011 will be one of the biggest yet and we need to make some space. We have big plans for 2011, we will be leaving a few people behind but building new bridges and we have a really good feeling about it.

The first of those will be Mark McNairy footwear. A collection of classic shoe silhouettes, designed in the US and made at the heart of Englands shoemaking industry, Northampton. The collection offers a combination of heritage craftmanship and subtle transatlantic style and we can't wait to get our hands on them.

Another joining us for SS11 is Han Kjobenhavn eyewear, born in Copenhagen in 2008, they inhabit all the qualities associated with classic Danish design: simplicity, quality and style. The eyewears foundations are made on the timeless aesthetic and are handbuilt in Denmark. As Han themselves say, "Classic isn't boring, but is a factor than can continue to inspire and relive itself over and over again".

As well as this we're looking forward to restocking the ever growing and ever-beautiful collection of leather goods and packs from MAKR. A brand we have a lot of respect and are extremely excited to be working with. As well as this, we'll have SS collections from A.P.C., SEH Kelly, Our Legacy, YMC, Libertine Libertine, SNS Herning and Common Projects. We are working on a few other links at the moment so keep your eyes peeled for what we hope will be the introduction of a few more brands in 2011.

We always said we wanted brands that produce clean, classic silhouettes and Common Projects epitomise this ideal. The refined aesthetic, the high standard of the materials, the detailing and the quality of production all come together to produce beautiful footwear that last and look better with age.

Common Projects now produce a varied collection of pieces, from sneakers to dress shoes to hiking boots, all defined by their small gold logo on the right rear of the shoe. The highstreet footwear retailers will be dominated with technical gimmicks, brash colour combinations and unnecessary additions which cause sneakers to be bulky. Common Projects remove all of these surplus and display universal and understated appeal to anybody with a keen eye for beautiful simplicity.

Every shoe in the collection is made in Italy, using durable leather goods (suede, nubuck, Italia nappa) which are hand-stitched to to the man-made rubber soles. The branding is minimal, and the effect is most certainly unmistakable which allow the wearer to make the shoes their own.

Brand focus: Veja A/W10

We've just had a delivery from one of our most exciting brands, Veja. If you don't know them, they have pioneered natural, ecological and fairtrade sneakers and carry goods. They work closely with cooperatives through Brazil to source organic cottons without the use of manures of pesticides, naturally treated suedes and every handstitched sole is produced from wild latex sourced from Amazonian Hevea trees. Why Brazil? Because the The Amazon Jungle is the only place on Earth where this tree grows in a totally wild state. Far detached from the contemporary image of ecological clothing, Veja produce stylish, understated and most importantly comfortable sneakers, fit for purpose.

The Indigenous range uses vegetable tanned suedes and natural latex rubber soles. We have two of the high-top sneakers from the range, in Nautico Blue and Camel, both with a white sole.

A few updates

Firstly, we received one of our most anticipated arrivals of the year in the form of two beautiful jackets from SEH. Kelly [whom we featured in a recent interview]. There are brands who produce beautiful products, and then brands whose product reflect their entire approach and SEH. Kelly definitely fall into the latter. Its extremely refreshing to find two people who are fully engaged with their relationships with users and fellow suppliers and who have a brand which encompasses a great story (one of visceral, ergonomic design and collaborative effort with existing industries) that you really believe in. We're extremely excited to be working with them, and I look forward to our relationship with them growing closer. The second part of the interview is coming very soon.

This is only the first part of our delivery for this season, but it comes in the form of two jackets. The first, featured here is a Wool Cashmere Charcoal Work Jacket. It is produced from a soft but robust wool-cashmere blend that is constructed in the English Cotswolds before being finished with English tortoiseshell horn buttons. The proportions are just exquisite, and its construction is beautifully detailed. £310

The second piece is a French Navy Work Jacket constructed from a compact cotton twill weave produced by a family run mill in Lancashire, England which really lends itself to a durable and robust quality. Again, the detail is incredible and its finished with black Coroza buttons. £230

We also received an email yesterday notifying us that our Common Projects delivery is on its way. We are going to be stocking the Desert Boot again in two colourways, now an iconic part of any CP collection, as well as the Achilles in both low and mid cut. We believe that the superior material and attention to detail given to these classic silhouettes are what make Common Projects so exciting, so we are keeping it simple.

Finally, another quick mention of one of our favourite brands at the moment, still producing beautiful hand-made products down in sunny Florida. We are down to our last few MAKR pieces, and can't wait to get some of the new products they've been working hard on. Another brand who are producing beautiful products using artisan crafts now lost in an era of mass production.

This week's been a busy one, and we've seen the arrival of some pretty amazing stock. Two newcomers to the store have landed on our doorstep, and most certainly haven't disappointed. We've had S.N.S Herning knits, straight from Denmark and Ally Capellino waxed cotton luggage as well as a few extra pieces from Our Legacy, A.P.C. and Filippa K to top off those collections.

Firstly, SNS Herning were founded by Soren Skyt in the Danish town of Herning eighty years ago utilising the bubble knitting patterns much desired bubble knit patterns that offered perfect protection and warmth from the elements to fisherman whilst at sea. They are knitted on looms using Jacquard strapping, and to this day the knits are still produced in Herning using original machinery, techniques and knowledge that gained them their reputation.

The Stark is now an S.N.S staple and here it is in the charchoal grey. Its a long slim-fitting cardigan, and the heavy cable knits are produced on the original looms in the town of Herning, Denmark. It doesn't get much better.

In the archive since 1979, this is another classic piece from S.N.S. Herning. In the typical Breton style (blue and scarlet), this striped crewneck pullover is knitted with the same virgin wool and the same techniques at the S.N.S. factory in Herning, Denmark. S.N.S Heavy Scarf Brown. This scarf is based on the sleeve pattern of their famous knits, and is open ended to allow you to warm your hands inside it. Its a staple S.N.S. piece which has won them their reputation they have today.

S.N.S have been knitted their renowned fisherman's sweater for over sixty years now, and the Rem scarf is essentially a sleeve from this sweater with open ends to keep your fingers warm. The bubble knitted pattern is more significant with ribbed ends.

SEH. Kelly pt. I - a proper introduction

We are highly anticipating the arrival of SEH. Kelly, a brand that specialise in production here on home turf using British Mills and factories to produce high quality workwear inspired garments that exemplify refinement and style. We didn't feel there would be any better way than to interview them ourselves to find out who they are, why they're doing it and how they're going about it as well as a few other things along the way. The pieces really are fantastic in the flesh, and the garments they have produced are a real tribute to the British clothing industry. This is by no means an easy task they have burdened themselves with, but to see two people doing it for all the right reasons, and most importantly, enjoying themselves along the way is something we advocate at the store, and the people (Sarah and Paul) behind the brand played as much a role in the very quick decision made to stock these guys. We hope the road from here is long and look forward to working closely with them over the next couple of years. Enjoy reading.

First of all, can you tell us who is behind the brand, a little about your background, and what inspired you to start your own label?

There's two of us: Sara Kelly and Paul Vincent. We've worked in the clothing industry in London for the best part of a decade, most recently for a house on Savile Row.

Savile Row was a terrific place to work; inspirational, day-in day-out -- partly because of the associated craft of bespoke tailoring and the fame and heritage of the houses, and partly because we were privileged to work alongside some of the best mills and factories in the country. This was what really spurned on the founding of the label: the chance to do something new -- to make garments more suited for everyday wear -- with all those people and establishments encountered during our time on the Row.

'Made in England' represents quality and heritage now, but British clothing industry has had its ups and downs over the past century. What is the state of English mills and factories today and does this fill you with hope for the future of the industry?

Happily, there are many mills and factories across the country that are thriving: long-running establishments that do what they do incomparably well, and have done for many years.

Others have fallen behind, struggle for regular trade, or have ceased trading completely. This has sadly been the case for decades. It's something we encountered during our time on the Row, and several times during the first 12 months of the label, too.

Nonetheless, right now, we work with some great establishments; places which provide expertise and standards that you really won't find anywhere else in the world. And our contacts list is by no means exhaustive -- we're sure there's plenty more to learn.

So, yes, it has taken its knocks over the years, but the industry's by no means down and out.

We understand that everything you use is produced here in the British Isles. How difficult is something like this to achieve? You must have spent a long time on the road.

It's not the most expedient route, no, but we find it nothing but a pleasure. And it's a constant learning experience.

We do travel a fair bit -- in the past few months, to the Cotswolds, Yorkshire, Lancashire, and up to Cumbria -- and while some mills and factories are tucked away and are rarely the easiest places to hunt down, doing so is probably the best part of the job.

We've been very fortunate, over the years, to make a good bunch of acquaintances in domestic industry. They've been unfailingly supportive in the past 12 month, and we've found that the more you scratch the surface, the more you find.

How does this collection compare to your expectations when you created the brand?

What some might see as a downside to the approach are the limits placed on cloths and, in particular, trims. But the challenge is a good one. It means there are some things you'll never be able to do, but that makes you look closer at and get the most from the materials you do have to hand. It keeps us focused and helps maintain a certain continuity and simplicity to our methods. It suits us well, and in that sense, the collection is close to what we expected, yes.

Brands have tried to keep their clothing production close to home in the past, and many have failed with attempts to keep price points low and the closure of factories. Do you feel this is a fundamental ethos in the maturation of SEH. Kelly?

It is fundamental and always will be. It's our sole reason for starting up. It's not a jingoistic thing; we just happen to take pleasure from working with English mills and factories, and happily, they're not far from our doorstep.

Price-points and other issues we just roll with. It'll never be the most profitable approach to making clothes, but we find it very rewarding in other ways. We have full faith in the establishments we have alongside us today, and have no reason not to be confident that we'll work with steadily more in the months and years ahead. Plenty of reasons to be cheerful, all told.

Here are a few new products that will be going live in the next week:

Possibly my favourite item this season. Merino wool shawl collar waffle-knit jumper in indigo.

A classic grey wool duffle coat, with weatherproof RiRi zips to bring it fully up to date. This is classic A.P.C. at its best.

Beautiful wool Nom de Guerre knit. Soft and guranteed to keep you warm as the nights slowly get crisp. This is Nom de Guerre doing refined as it should be done.

A total change in direction from Cheap Monday here but we think it looks great. A classic double breasted coat with belt fastening waist. Classic styling and nicely put together.

As well as this, our boys over at Article Magazine recently put together a photoshoot here on the streets of Sheffield using a wide variety of pieces from our store with the help of stylist Jodie Blackburn. Its going to feature in their first issue of Volume II series, and will be entitled to Drifter. It features Sheffield lads the Heebie Jeebies... be happy that they're actually wearing any clothes.

So, the restock of A.P.C.'s now infamous denim has been hugely anticipated but has finally happened. We have full sizing in the New Standard, New Cure, Rescue Raw as well as the washed black Petit Standards. If there is any doubt as to why we love these jeans so much, here is a little reminder of a post we laid down almost 12 months ago regarding what are now a staple of modern design.

Our first product is the APC New Standard. As a brand, APC needs little introduction. Adopting a very Miesian 'Less is more' approach to their clothing which seems to have been lost in time, althought certainly still appreciated, geared towards essential wardrobe needs. Much like the New Standard, the creator - Tunisian born Jean Touitou's thoughts about the clothing industry are direct and to the point. Practically unchanged in two decades of production, the New Standard is a unisex jean made from raw selvage denim that can't help fitting everybody with unrivaled precision. They epitomise utilitarian design - there is nothing superfluous, no external branding (excusing the neatly attached APC pin and the top fly button which is engraved engraved 'APC, Paris pres de Luxembourg') but most importantly no gimmicky washes, paint splatters or uniform holes.

However, its not just the jeans we love A.P.C. for. These guys are just the masters of refined, timeless style. There is little else we need to tell you, as they've been doing this for longer than I've been alive, but here are a few pieces that really set a new benchmark from their latest collection.

Veja created their brand with a view to produce stylish products that remain ecologically responsible as well as respecting the rights of trade cooperatives. They chose to look to Brazil to source ecological leather, canvas and latex working closely with artisan ateliers that offer fair pay and treatment to all their producers. They have been producing shoes since 2005, but now they have launched Project Numero Deux with a launch in London, which consists of a collection of carry goods that adopt the same ethos that has gone to make Veja one of the world's most observed brands.

The focus has always been on responsibility, and their dedication to working closely with existing workforces in Brazil is still at the height of interest. The bag that we are stocking is called the Acacia Bag, and is named after the root extract which is used to tan the biscuit coloured leather used for its shoulder strap, handles and leather zip pulls. The use of this acacia ensures that the tanning solution is completely natural and avoids any polluting tannins during the process. Impressive, yeah? Well, the lining and canvas are also made from organic cotton grown by a cooperative of producers in the Northeastern regions of Brazil, using a method that opposes and bands the use of chemicals and pesticides at any stage of the growth. Once these have been sourced, the bags are then hand-crafted in an atelier that focuses on the rights of their worker's, before being shipped to France where they are transported around the Parisian canals, to avoid excessive air transport, for retail.

Showing us how its done

Firstly, we're extremely sorry for all the problems that we were experiencing over the weekend, but they are now resolved and we hope that nobody was too inconvenienced by the whole situation. It was the Bank Holiday Jinx determined to spoil something for us.

So far, the bar has been set at an extremely high level, but its just been pushed that little bit further with two brands at the top of their game right now.

Our collection from Nom de Guerre this year can be described as nothing more than refined, but its beautiful in its simplicity. Its great to see the boys have pushed their production back to Japan, this time utilising some great Japanese cottons and lovely brushed wool in their shirting, outerwear and legwear. The same influences are still ever present, a strong military aesthetic dominates the collection, but everything has taken a step back and let it be appreciated for what it is... no epaulettes or unnecessary detailing meaning the focus is purely on material and quality of production. The pieces, despite military references, will sit happily alongside anything else in your wardrobe. I must say, the chinos can only be described as the mutt's nuts of trousers; heavyweight, robust and classic fit. Hats off to the guys on this one, they've hit the nail on the head.

I've already sung the praises of Our Legacy numerous times on this blog, and I'm not sure if its just the honeymoon period still being our first collection with them, but its like they knew exactly what was missing from my (and very limited) wardrobe before I did. We just received a few more pieces (with a couple more to go) from them and they're bulking out what is set to be my favourite collection of the year. A grey lambswool three pocket cardigan formed like a relaxed jacket, a brushed wool hunting shirt in red, grey and indigo and a fine gauge U Lap Neck sweater in olive fine Italian cotton. They'll be going live this week, so keep your eyes open for those.

Before everything kicks off, we've had some great pieces fall into our laps over the past couple of weeks (we've been slow on the updates, I know) and its adding a greatly diverse colour palette to the shop contrasting those final few remaining SS pieces. With SNS, A.P.C. and Veja expected this week, as well as the rest of Our Legacy here is just a little round up of some great pieces we have had in over the past couple of weeks and we're keeping it Scandinavian!

Firstly, Our Legacy (collection so far) are now running and already receiving great praise from everybody who sees them. Its all about the material selection from these guys, amazing cord, heavy cottons and some of the finest waxed cotton. The piece I'm most looking forward to receiving is the corduroy shirt on its way... a favourite here in store for the past year or so, we can't wait to have you lot donning it too. However, don't forget about the button down check shirt, and amazing knitwear we're also stocking.

Keeping it Scandinavian, newboys Libertine Libertine utilising heavyweight cotton in a big way. Chinos, parkas and workwear jackets in classic cuts and rugged materials. What more could you want this AW? I wore these chinos the other day, and handed over the cash for them half an hour after. The material is soft, but feels hardwearing and the cut is just awesome.

So, we're right in the thick of Autumn Winter deliveries, but the thick winter knits and parkas don't look anywhere out of place when you think about the weather we're experiencing right now. Its about this time that I start moaning about the warm, sleepless night and I feel I've been deprived so far this year.

Anyway, enough of that as we're not complaining about any of the awesome pieces we've start receiving over the past few weeks. Like we said, Our Legacy, Libertine Libertine, Filippa K and YMC were first off the mark, but Acne have treated us to a few new 100% cotton tees and what is set to be one of the most sought after pieces this season, the Pop Heavy Knit in Charcoal Grey.

As well as this, Eastpak were kind enough to drop us off another rucksack from their premium line in the form of a waxed cotton Padded Pak'r in Black with internal red check quilting and laptop protector.

All will be online by the end of the week, so if you're going in for any of these products be sure to be sharpish as our numbers on them are pretty low.

Manufactured and screenprinted here in Blighty using organic Japanese cotton, there are few brands out there doing it better so get involved!

Now... we've had postmen rattling at our door every morning for the past week or so and the shop is starting to resemble a Rachel Whiteread exhibition. However, we're slowly starting to dismantle the piles, and we're getting more and more excited every time. So far, we've barely scratched the surface, but the first drops from Our Legacy, Libertine Libertine, YMC, Filippa K and Eastpak are looking great.

Its our first season with Our Legacy and so far, they've only teased us with four items, but boy have they hit the right buttons. Landing online this week will be their beautiful Waxed Cotton Parka, Round Neck Knit in Zinc, a Placket Button Down Shirt in charcoal grey and the infamous Great Sweat in a Black Reverse Twill. Plus, don't forget the interview with them in Issue 2 of Inventory Magazine.

As well as our first season with Our Legacy, fellow Scandinavians Libertine Libertine have joined us and is sure to be a big hit this Autumn Winter. With their trademark Howl shirt in Port Royal check and light black cord, as well as navy blue Count Chinos with harlequin patterned taping, their collections are free and effortless with a tight grasp on masculinity. With Libertine Libertine, it really is all in the details, just see for yourself.

Ideology veterans YMC have been with us since the start, and despite having a strong portfolio of products behind them, they're still blowing us away with their collections. We've taken a delivery of the updated Nylon Parka in Brown, a blue Bib Front Henley, Flannel Stripe shirts and a couple of scarves (Fairisle and Cable) so keep your eyes peeled on our online store this week for their arrival into cyber space.

Last but by no means least, we'll be adding Eastpak to our list of brands with a delivery of some reworks of their classic rucksacks and pieces from their heritage rusksack line.

So we're not in the height of sale season, and there are still a few sizes knocking around at absolutely bargain prices. And as exciting as this is, it also means we start to see what our brands have to offer next season, however difficult it is to think about knitwear and coats in this heat.

To combat this, Cheap Monday have dropped their collection of sunglasses named Clairvoyant by the store for us and they're an absolute steal. Disposable fashion is not part of our ethos, but if you're as clumsy as I am, you'll understand the pain of taking your favourite shades places they shouldn't go before losing, sitting on, snapping or smashing them. We're retailing these at £19 a pair, and at that price, who cares how you treat them?! The shapes and colours aren't groundbreaking, but reproduce classic models to keep your eyes shaded in true style.

As well as this, local photographer, acquaintance and champion of all things pork related, Shaun Bloodworth has stepped into the world of cinema with his first film Minds Locked Together. It was commissioned for Mary Anne Hobb's Sonar visuals and documents the electronic music scene and nightlife around the city. We went to the premiere at the Showroom here in Sheffield last week, and just wanted to say congratulations as it really looked great on the big screen.

Acne took over Paris last week for their first international menswear presentation, and I think it took everybody by surprise. They've turned everything on its head, with 2010 show baggy upperbody wear and tight legwear, but S/S 2011 is an exercise in juxtaposition and typically, androgyny. Their jackets are short and tight fitting, whilst they're are taking a leaf from Bowie's book with wide, flared legwear.

Acne have said they are attempting to create "the perfect disco, school boy look" by challenging classic proportions throughout their collection, "waists become higher and tshirts become longer". The materials just heighten this sense of sixties extravagance and "silhouettes are pushed across silks, jerseys, cotton, wool and microfibre pieces".

"I had a moment of clarity for this collection with my design team at a place called Tango in Paris. It was just a good night out actually, and that dance hall with all of its styled up, dueting couples and slow routines, reminded me of a school dance. For me it also has to do with personal history; in my teens I would travel to these summer dances in remote halls in the Swedish countryside – cause that’s what you do. These dances were super exotic parties for me in my youth; believe me – it’s more spiritual than doing drugs, the all night light kinda sends everyone into this crazy positive place. I have always found this very interesting – it is quite seldom that you find yourself dancing with strangers and I started to imagine this fun, young, imaginative boy going to a school disco. Sometimes I think fashion should just be that: a fun and happy moment and a memory. When I was thinking of my first international Menswear showing, Paris was the natural choice. And why Le Chateaubriand? For me it is about a fun night, great food and wine, sexy people and having fun either in a group or just watching. And why not turn a restaurant into a disco?” – Jonny Johansson

Finally, if you're looking for the perfect BBQ album, its got to be Swim by Caribou. He's a doctor in mathematics, so there is no surprise this album really adds up. Its mellow with experimental percussion and it takes dance music to much more fluid realms. Its a real journey through the album and there is no better record to have on the iPod. He'll be appearing at Field Day this year alongside Phoenix and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, and if his Sonar appearance is anything to go by, its well worth the trip to go and see.

Back from Barcelona

So, its been a couple of days now since returning from the beautiful city that is Barcelona and we're close to catching up on sleep and getting things back to normal. The city never ceases to astound me, and Sonar was absolutely fantastic, as expected. There is nothing more reassuring than a group of forward-thinking musicians and artists taking control of their city to exhibit the best music in the world right now. Off Sonar proved to be the biggest surprise, with a collection of vintage stores and connoisseur record stores hosting international radio shows and DJs live for the festival. A special mention goes to Discos Paradiso who put on the Hepcat Radio show hosted by Mamiko Motto with sets from Hudson Mohawke, Jackmaster and Eclair Fifi, playing to a crowd of three. It was definitely a highlight of the weekend. Its great to see some guys pushing their love for vintage, boutique and rare vinyl. I'll stop boating anyway.

Now we're back, MAKR Carry Goods are online and ready to buy with one line already sold out. These are extremely limited so if you want one, there is no chance to hesitate, because we didn't have many. We're the first store in Europe to stock them, so a big thanks to MAKR and we look forward to what they can offer us in the future.

There has also been a restock of a few of the classic Passarella Death Squad tees, but again, we've only got limited numbers and they're destined to be as popular as ever.

Holly Verso - Westminster BA Grad favourite

A couple of weeks ago, Max headed to London to see his other half's collection in the Westminster BA Fashion graduate show. One of the collections that really caught his eye was by Holly Verso, who offers up a selection of garments that seem draw inspiration from streetwear, workwear and outerwear to produce a collection focused around cycling that exhibits some great use of materials, intrepid use of raw denim (sponsored by the guys at Albam), and an adventurous take on classic mens jackets (the spare wheel being one of my favourite ideas in the collection.)

Holly is currently working up a price list and will be selling off her collection at the end of the month, with all pieces obviously being one-offs there has been quite an interest. As well as Our Legacy, there are a few other brands we just couldn't stop ourselves working with, from Scandinavia as well as here in the United Kingdom. These brands are allowing us to move in directions we previously haven't looked and add a diversity to the store which still adheres to our desire to supply clean, classic menswear. Most importantly, these brands have stories, and their products adopt yours every day.

SEH. Kelly - Clothes made with mills and factories in England

Spun, stitched, cut, sewn, and finished — from fabrics to components and through every stage of manufacturing, each garment is a product of the clothing and textile industry in England. The love for our domestic clothing industry was inspired by their work alongside many manufacturers on Saville Row. Their aesthetic is driven by workwear, but all garments are refined and modified to have a usefulness and relevance in every day modern life.

The collection we are taking for A/W10 comprises of cashmere, Shetland wool, and brushed cotton drills and twills designed around factory attire and workwear. Sourcing of fabric and components runs the breadth of the domestic textile industry, with flecked cashmere-wool from the Cotswolds, hard-wearing cotton drills and twills from a mill in Lancashire, and knitwear in the form of moss-stitched Shetland yarns.

We're expecting big things from these guys, and appreciate their dedication to forming lasting relationships with manufacturers to reignite a once great clothing industry here in England, but also their dedication to producing new fabrics alongside preserved local crafts.

SNS Herning

Producing top quality knitwear from their small factory in Herning since the 1920s, today SNS employ just 5 people. Their team comprises of three knitters who produce approximately 2,500 sweaters a year and who sign each individual pieces they produce as well as the two gentleman at the helm of this true heritage brand. As soon as you hold one of these knits in your hands you will think "they don't make them like this anymore." However, SNS are still producing virtuous garments in limited yet diverse lines and they'll soon be available at Ideology. Not only producing great garments, but the guys were true gentlemen when we visited them in Copenhagen with the nicest attic space to display their products.

These guys had one of the most interesting collections on show at Gallery in Copenhagen this year, combining rails and old wooden carts to display some great shirting, t-shirts and heavyweight chinos finished with beautiful discreet details. Chinos are finished with bright selvedge outseams and alternative coloured bottom buttons on their shirting. The brand follows their title, a brand who is free from the restraint of social norms; motivated to create a brand based on a different set of values and set new standards for the fashion industry. Libertine Libertine strives to stimulate the creative and celebrate the extraordinary in every day life.

The collection consists of elementary designs, seasonal items and a new take on classics.

Our Legacy A/W10

At this point in time, we take forward some of our favourite brands and add to our evolving range of collections to include some new comers and some old timers who we feel all have a huge amount to offer and a story to tell. Whoever they are, we think we're going to be working alongside some really special people.

The first of these brands is Our Legacy, from Sweden, who are offering their take on classic style. They are a brand for the modern gentleman, of all ages, made to appear thrown together in a perfectly natural and confident way alongside anything in your current wardrobe. The use of Italian, British and Portuguese fabrics give them the feel of being pulled straight from your Grandfather's wardrobe, but remodeled to offer relevance in a modern context. However, the great thing about this brand is they do these things with a sense of humour. Drawing from their knowledge of graphic design and sales, these guys took that leap of faith, and season-on-season their fits improve, new materials are sourced and factories discovered and we're excited to be part of their evolution. People often talk of 'effortless style' and it would be an insult not to mention Our Legacy's name when discussing this topic. You can't help when looking through the collection each season to feel reassured by the familiarity of their pieces, but the enjoyment of noticing new additions. When you look into a brand such as Ralph Lauren, not only did he sell you garments, but you buy into an entire culture for which some become lifelong devotees; Our Legacy have every opportunity to grow into this kind of brand.

MAKR Carry Goods

A wallet seems one of those sacred things. My first was given to me as a gift by my father, from which I opened my first bank account. It was a true right of passage. Its taken pride of place in my back pocket for nearly fifteen years and the leather holds everything scar and indentation. There are certain qualities that a wallet should fulfill: ergonomic, tactile and strong. We believe we have found a brand that understands and honours these modest accessories.

The brand are MAKR Carry Goods, a small collective of artisan craftspeople based in Florida. By working with their hands, drawing at 1:1 and building prototypes, they approached the task with a more visceral approach which directs the product down a user driven route. They stain the leather, laser etch each piece, build prototypes, edge paint, buff and wax the finished pieces, and apply hardware like buttons, snaps and straps. Makr was founded under the premise that they would craft every aspect of the final product. Everything is made in small batches, so you can bet your bottom-dollar that Joe Bloggs in I.T. won't be carrying the same as you.

It does not finish with wallets, however, they are dedicated to applying this philosophy to all areas of carry goods, so we will also be stocking the MAKR unisex tote bags

This week we took a delivery from the guys over in Canada behind Inventory magazine, which is causing a real stir in some menswear subcultures, looking further into the story and people that make clothing brands exciting. The delivery was the much anticipated second issue which is includes articles on Margaret Howell, New Balance, Our Legacy, Unis and much much more:

Named after the poorest day of the week, after you've spent all of your money on the weekend's debauchery , Cheap Monday started in the suburbs of Stockholm. The pair behind the brand, Orjan Andersson and Adam Friberg, were running a successful second hand store, before feeling a need to expand their collections with a cheap but affordable line of washed and unwashed denim. Looking to high-end denim brands for inspiration, the pair have been proving that style and quality does not need to be compromised by the lower price points they wanted to achieve. Now, Cheap Monday are recognised as an international brand with an ever-growing devoted following all over the world, they are stocked in over 1000 stores. They are a cult brand, and their characteristic skull logo is recognizable a mile off.

Acne Jeans is an iota of a much wider brand of advertisers, product designers, publishers and multimedia artists working under the brand title 'Ambition to Creation of Novel Expression'. The denim offshoot began in 1997 when 100 pairs of raw denim with red stitching were produced for friends, family and clients, but it wasn't until 1998 after a campaign of public request, that Acne jeans started to become commericially available, and have since released two collections a year consisting of both raw and pre-washed denim. The thing that Acne can really be highly commended for is their understanding of washing, producing some of the most diverse and beautiful fades in their denim.

The Max range by Acne sit just below the waist with a medium rise then cute slim through the hip and thigh with a tapered leg. The flat rivets characterize them.

We looked at how ACNE have utilised film to enhance their recognition in the world of fashion, but something that earns them respect and identifies them outside of the world of fashion is their in house print, the ACNE Paper. They focus on a key theme, topic or idea and push people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds to produce work of all artistic direction, whether is be photography, painting or writing as a way of bringing together artistic minds of all generations. It is published twice a year and the transparency of the brand continues as they offer a look at the printing process that produces this revered magazine.

If there is such a thing as exhibition envy, I am feeling it right now. The National Gallery of Art in Washington is putting on the first scholarly exhibition of a true legend of modern American poetry (and personal favourite of mine), Allen Ginsberg. From early photographs of close friends and fellow writers, Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs through his rise to literary fame and involvement in an expanding generation of beat writers, this is an intimate exhibition of his friends and lovers all assessed in scholarly scrutiny.

With Earth day only two days away, ethical clothing has had some focus in the national media over the weekend, most notably the FT's look at ethical cashmere. Earth Day was designed to inspire awareness and understanding of the Earth's environment, celebrated around the world since its introduction by Senator Gaylord Nelson back in 1970.

As well as an increasing amount of focus on the quality of garments produced (afterall, the longer they last and perform, the more environmentally friendly they are), there is a growing focus on sustaining artisan cooperatives, skills and trade. A brand we stock, and I felt it was appropriate to bring a little focus to once again is Veja, the ecological footwear brand. Their intention to use fairtrade cottons, leather and latex as well as maintaining the dignity and respect of craftsmen and women they have created a global chain that emphasises solidarity and the environment.

The thing we have always recognised Nom de Guerre for is their ability to weave harsh military references into an everyday wardrobe that looks clean and effortless. Fashion, film and ACNE

LFW saw Burberry creative director Christopher Bailey exploit our digital age by broadcasting 3-D coverage of their collection to four exclusive cities around the world. Alongside this, a huge debate was sparked about the role that the internet blogger has to play in the world's Fashion Weeks. It goes to show that, however you view it, we are in a period of transition that pragmatic fashion houses are ready to exploit. The internet, its broadcasting capability and the power of film in fashion is becoming ever more poignant. ACNE, one of the most creative fashion houses around at the moment (in my opinion) are more than ready to explore and utilise this power.

Fashion film has become more and more important to ACNE over the past year or two and they have openly displayed their interest in the creative dialogue between fashion and film. Their display at Copenhagen Fashion Week showed an understanding of the understated but also displayed an artistic arrogance by projecting a film of their AW10 collection at the gateway to the trade show. However, this understanding of an expanding market continues, especially that which is bought by the internet, namely, the time of live streaming.

At the heart of this tempestuous and haughty piece of cinema is a collection of denim set against pale, shackled angelic figures. Surface to Air opened the doors of their new flagship Paris store in January and they translate their innovative use of material to their built environment. In collaboration with Federico Masotto the creative team behind the Parisian brand have explored sparkling concrete, marquina marble, moving panels and trompe l'oeil flooring which reflects the innovative and exclusive materials that the brand utilise in their clothing. Masotto finished the space by produced custom and contemporary furniture built by artisan craftman Paolo Vale.

We also have new leather weekend bags from S2A in store. Made from soft calf skin leather, there is no need to break these bags in, they're ready to go. The interior is lined with red, navy and plaid lining and interior pockets. Big fans.

Common Projects now in store

Following on from the last post on Common Projects, here we are to let you know that this season's shoes have arrived in store.

Five hole slip on:

I've discussed this shoe at great lengths with a lot of people. Its a classic style taken from early 70s California skate styles thats proved to be a timeless sneaker. They're produced with super soft nappa combined with fine Italian suede two-tone detail toe, tongue and rear heel details which does justice to the reinterpretation of such a classic piece. The staple gold stamp just tops off what we see as one of CP's strongest shoes so far.

Desert Boot

The Desert Boot is back, and available in light and medium grey. A classic CP piece but this season with a much lower sole profile and constructed from super soft Italian suede (above) or a washed Italian Nubuck leather (below). The photos speak for themselves, quality construction, refined design and beautiful materials.

Ask me to pick my favourite piece from the store this season, it'd be a tough choice, but I may have to go for this classic CP Tournament. They're made from 100% Nappa leather, with a hand stitched sole and classic gold stamp. They're so simple it hurts. However, they're constructed with love and attention to detail, and the materials will get better year on year with every scratch you can achieve. Wear them with your favourite denim or some rolled up chinos, socks or no socks, they'll look amazing.

Common Projects

What makes Common Projects so special? After all, season-on-season they're arguably one of the most understated footwear collections available. With strict colourways, basic construction and minimal branding, it takes a trained eye to recognise them as a brand, but its simple to see they're a great piece of footwear. Despite their simplicity, they are managing to turn heads all over the world (including the likes of Becks and Kanye West), precisely by being so perfectly subtle in a world where the product and its production have taken a back seat to their logo.

I've spoken extensively about my attraction to raw denim because they're a blank canvas and over time it holds a visual story, a material that gets better with every day they're worn and every activity you do in them. I feel the same way about Common Projects sneakers.

The brand is a partnership between Prathan Poopat and Flavio Girolami. The collaboration sees the two men working together on a day-to-day basis via the internet and meeting either in New York or Italy (where the shoes are produced) when working on their latest collection. They fact they're handstitched to the sole of the shoe rather than being vulcanized like most sneakers on the mainstream market as well as only using the finest leathers and suedes shows an integrity and appreciation of artisan culture. In my experience, Common Projects last longer (and get better through the process) than sneakers produced in perhaps Vietnam or China, for example. This adds to the appeal of the brand, with both sneaker heads and people looking for a refined casual shoe both flocking and paying the steeper price tag for a design that is certainly not breaking boudaries, but offering a luxury product with subtle, elegant appeal.

The new season line will be hitting our store this week, and they're sure to be a great hit, so keep your eyes peeled for the web drop.

Denim, for a long time, was something I took for grant. I saw denim (jeans, mostly) as a great casual garment when I couldn't think of anything else to wear. However, I asked myself what now seems like a serious question one day, "Why would I want to buy jeans that look like I've already worn them?" I'm a firm believer in minimal wardrobes that contain stout garments that over time lose part of their identity and become a piece of your own. I can't think of a material that encompasses this idea as part of its natural lifespan than dry (or raw) denim.

I yesterday got my first hole in my A.P.C New Standards and its been a long time coming after wearing them every day for around eight months now and I'm not going to try and hide it. Cycling, climbing, carpentry and building fires are just a few activities I have done in these jeans and every stain, crease and tear is a scar of what has been an eventful and exciting eight months. With such a strong history of being a workwear and naval material, it should be worn every day, to do everything and anything. Don't be precious with your jeans and it will pay dividends. I've never been so attached to an item of clothing, and I think the hard work that goes into a new pair of raw jeans is why.

It'd be great to get some images together from customers who were curious, enthusiastic or uninterested in raw denim to see how everything has worked out 12 months on and the story behind their denim.

In attempt to maintain denim democracy, we also stock some great denim from Acne, Nom de Guerre and now Cheap Monday who are all making strong headway in the world of denim, creating details, washes and fits that are really defining them as brands.

Its been a while since we last updated the blog, and there has been a lot happening around the store with the emergence of nearly our entire Spring stock so we've been asking everybody whose visited our compact store to climb over piles of cardboard, bubble wrap and cellophane to look at the new products so thanks for putting up with all the chaos!

As well as the shelves, rails and drawers of the store bulging with the beautiful pieces you'd associate with early spring, so is the website is stocked with pieces from A.P.C, Nom de Guerre, Acne, YMC and Filippa K with new Common Projects, Tretorn and the arrival of Cheap Monday filtering onto the site gradually over the next week or so. There was also a drop from A.P.C of their New Standard and their New Cures so grab them whilst they're available because they're proving hot property right now. We also have stamps! With a local lad, Daniel Hayes, we're looking to constantly experiment and evolve our branding and engagement with product and customer.

Lastly, I've got to mention it being a big F1 fan, what is everybody's opinion on Bahrain at the weekend? The new rules look set to cause turbulence off the track, and very little activity on the track. However, its just the first race, and everyboy is still getting use to the changes in the cars, so lets hope for an exciting and inspiring season. We're fully behind Vettel and the Red Bull team so good luck to them.

APC SS10

APC are one of those extremely difficult brands. I talk about them a lot, but I can't explain why I like them so much. The depth and complexity of their products come from their unforgiving simplicity. My first pair of raw denim was APC, and back then they were even more affordable than they are now, and I still swear by them. They are rarely referred to as the top of the pile in a specific product (most markets are dominated by the real artisans), however, season-on-season they produce great overall collections. I'm not a fan of "seasonal lines", but APC seem to be one of those widely respected brands that can do little wrong, and without trying do a lot right.

This ideal comes through in this season's collection. What excited me was to see some of their lightweight pieces from the AW09/10 collection being recycled in this season's lookbook. That is the whole idea in a nutshell. Inoffensive, timeless and stylish pieces, so why not mix in some of the AW shirting with the SS lighter knits? I'm going to be involving Oxford shirts from three or four years ago in with newer pieces from this season. It'd be great to see more of this running through lookbooks over the next couple of seasons; brands thinking harder about reinventing classic, perennial pieces that sit alongside one another year after year. I want to see less perfectly groomed models, wearing brand new clothes, and more focus on time as a process of clothing. The best pieces are the ones that, for example, you can no longer tell was purchased at Ralph Lauren, because you've had such an impact on it as a piece. For any real enthusiast, I am sure that the buying is just the beginning of an exciting period of wear and personalization of a garment.

I saw this great bag on the tube whilst in London yesterday. The man was carrying two great pieces of luggage. As well as this, he had a canvas holdall that still proudly wore the scars of years of use, but I couldn't discreetly snap a photo of that.

Back to the earlier topic for two moments. A Continuos Lean have been at the forefront of internet blogging on menswear and style since its birth. They caught up with the man behind APC, Jean Touitou, for a chat about everything from the state of the internet, to some of the things that inspire him in his work.

New stock starting to arrive

So we had APC and YMC drop today. The SS10 is looking pretty smart and the APC is already priced and hanging on the rails. It'll be hitting the online store this week if all goes to plan with other brands slowly creeping on in the next couple of weeks.

On a very seperate note, no matter how you felt about McQueen's clothing, there is no doubting that he was one of the best stage directors around. In comparison to his warm and loving personality, his shows were gothic and extremely provocative, an artist's exploration of the darker elements of his psyche. His work rarely excited me, but the respect I have for a designer, who with a few accomplices, took British design to an international scale. However many times you see it, this video is beautiful:

Gallery Copenhagen

So the past few weeks have been pretty hectic. Dashing between London, Paris and now Copenhagen to meet brands, select the lines for next year and also add some people to our family.

We just returned from a couple of days in Copenhagen. We combined the trade show Gallery with meeting a couple of people we are going to be adding to our list of brands as well as see some familiar faces and catch (and have a few beers, obviously.) Firstly, what an awesome city. People have always told me how great it was, but I was in awe and didn't want to return to the UK. A big thanks needs to be given to Esben from SNS Herning for showing us around and supplying us with some much needed coffee. The stores in the heart of the centre are awesome, and supplying the city with a great diversity of brands, magazines and artwork.

We've also got a drop from Our Legacy for A/W to look forward to now. They put out a really nice collection and we wanted to take so much more than we did. Its all about cord, flannel and washed chambray for us courtesy of the Swedish lads this year and we think its going to sit nicely along some of our other brands. Adding that feeling of inherited clothing from your Grandpa's wardrobe to the store which will be an awesome fork in the road for us. We've always said that we need to try things and learn from mistakes, and this could be the case here, but these are products we feel are beautiful, and timeless so we're really excited. It seems the buzzword this year has been heritage, and you could thats what these guys are trying to replicate, but everything is stripped back, and cut so finely. Its everything a contemporary label should be attempting in my eyes; paying tribute and giving respect to those classic items of a staple wardrobe whilst bringing them up to date with material and cut. My favourite pieces were the reverse cotton twill crew neck sweat, heavy gauge cords (shirts and trousers) and the maroon hunting parka.

A shout out needs to go out to the guys from Libertine Libertine, too. For such a young collective, they're really pushing ahead with some classic pieces elevated with some amazing detailing. Its those little things that really make a piece go from good to great. I personally cannot wait for Max to see the rest of the collection in London and meet their reps. They're also such cool guys, and really accommodating. Lets hope we get a chance to hook up with them in the summer so they can show us how to party in real style.

Its crazy how all this happens just as I was getting so excited for the Spring Summer stuff thats dropping as we speak... all I want is next years Autumn Winter. This was my first opportunity, however, being involved in the buying process right from the front line and it was great. This however does mean that we are needing to shift the final sizes from our current collections, so we've slashed the prices one last time to start getting this year's Spring Summer sorted as soon as possible and there are some really great pieces on their way.

Its time to grab a bargain however, and a lot of the pieces will work nicely for you during Spring Summer too. My best deals right now are:

Brew Dog Beers

So last night I had too many beers. Or is it only too many when you find yourself covered in the content of your own digestive system and tended to by a matron for 12 hours whilst in a hospital bed feeling like every bone in your body is slowly decaying? The main reason I drank so much was so I could work my way through the beers of offer at the Sheffield Tap by Scottish Beer production house Brew Dog. Every single one I tried was amazing; Rip Tide, Punk IPA and Dogma. However, the one that really had my taste buds experiencing sneezing eight times in one go was the Trashy Blonde: biscuity, exotic fruits and light malt... its almost like turning up to a Sex Pistols show in a tuxedo.

This is also amazing and kept me thoroughly entertained throughout the day.

We have our final reductions on the website now as well so get over and check out the bargains you could find yourself and brace yourselves for the new stock coming in the next couple of weeks.

How much do you know about your urban food-print?

The guys over at BLDGBLOG are always pushing interesting information through my Google reader, and consistently pushing themselves to help us rethink our constantly evolving urban environment. Their latest project takes a chance to look at the architecture of urban food distribution, our food behaviours in our cities, social and technological innovations which changed the culinary landscape of NYC and an open forum to discuss future directions for the edible make up of the city dubbed 'the Big Apple.'

The architecture of food has been a hot topic throughout the University of Sheffield recently, and its an ever growing trend to think about production, distribution and consumption in a world with a growing demand and shrinking product. As a student of architecture, I am constantly thinking about the ever evolving responsibility of the architect and their role in society today. If we look at creatures in the wider environment, for example ants, who grow and harvest their own food, safely handle material waste (including that of other species), create their own natural medicines and disinfectants whilst maintaining the soil and constantly renourishing the ecosystem they inhabit.

It seems that understanding the deeper nature of where food comes from and how we handle it is a really good starting point. The biggest challenge for us over the next fifty years, is for the architect to seperate himself from object driven design that satisfies our artistic ego, and begin to think about and focus closer on how we are going to globally manage and distribute constrained resources. The design debate shouldn’t be as Bruce Mau states, “the world of design”, but rather, “the design of the world”.

We're going to be thinking a lot over the next few weeks about the culinary fabric that has shaped Sheffield, and the people in this city that are taking these issues into their own hands. Architecture as iconic building is becoming less important to us and we should be thinking more about the systems, flows and networks that make our city tick.

I have seen a lot of people using double exposure for quite a while now, and the novelty was beginning to wear off. They look awesome at first, but then you realise, however great they look on your Facebook or Myspace its just a blurr of colour and ones enough... for me, anyway. However, Kitsune Noir directed our attention to this interesting project run by Damon Winter, a photographer for the NY Times, where he uses double exposues to juxtapose images. Some of his photographs purely focus around light, texture, structure and form whereas further images go on to show a much deeper social commentary about his perceptions of every day life in New York City.

The thing that really struck me was his consideration for his surroundings. I like the way he questions everything and attempts in some way to give himself an understanding of his environment by constantly readdressing himself and revisiting his sites. If nothing else, they work as beautifully constructed images carefully considered and formed. However, the most chilling part is the isolation they highlight, in a series of photographs entitled 'Neighbors.'

I've been thinking a lot recently about what I look for in clothes, why I have purchased the things I have in the past and what I am really trying to say about myself through the way I dress. I've always had a strong feeling that 'less is more', in true Miesian style, but not in the sense of being 'minimalist', but in terms of stripping everyback to its bare essentials. I feel this is why I am so enthralled by fixed gear cycling, its just so simple... you're the motor, you are the breaks, thats it!

As a student of architecture and an amateur clothing obsessive, I feel this is a theory that can be applied further and with such aplomb. I have purchased a lot of pieces in the past that are questionable and on the most part, embarrassing. 2010 is the year that this stops. I am not ashamed, and I do not regret these choices, because they have helped me come to the decision I have reached. What I want to show about myself is not an understanding of fashion or trends, but an appreciation and respect to craft, material and culture.

With this in mind, I have thinking about a staple wardrobe, the five pieces that I think would satisfy my desire for style, but also show my appreciation for craft and material. The pieces my wardrobe will be including:

Raw denim
Hand made shoes (preferably English)
Oxford shirts
Knitwear - cashmere for spring and autumn and wool for winter
A great watch - I currently wear a Breitling Colt series

I live in a city, and I spend a lot of time on foot so I want comfort and I want longevity from the things I wear, as well as products that are crafted with empathy and spirit. On top of this, I want to tell a story. This is why I love raw denim so much, because you have to work hard for them, and really push every stitch to its limit to get the best results.

I have said it before, but style is timeless, and fashion is not. We don't see people still looking good in flared cords, but pull out your parents oxford shirts from twenty years ago and they look timeless. I don't recommend wearing the same clothes every day, but there is nothing wrong with a staple wardrobe.

Its crazy to think that a year or so ago, Acne was a relatively unknown Sweish label, mainly recognised for their skinny fitting jeans. The label started in 1997 when founder Jonny Johansson designed 100 pairs of jeans and distributed them amongst his family and friends. From these humble roots, Acne has become an international fashion power house with over 16 stores worldwide, including collaborations with France's legendary fashion house Lanvin and a brilliant Fall/Winter collection 2009. From here, its become a brand that can't get out of the broadsheet fashion supplements and off everybody's tongue. We've been shipping Acne across Europe for almost a year now, so it was great to see Hint Magazine catch up with the founder Jonny Johanson as he vacationed with his family in Stockholm.

The last year has been great for Acne. The recession has been good for you...

The recession has been good in the sense that it means I can focus on what I really like and almost "clean up" what I do. When I was in London a year ago I met an American guy who was recently bankrupt. He didn’t have any money so I took him for a drink and bought him some food. He was a vintage collector and a writer, but he is a musician, too, and he told me that even though his business is on its knees, he has never felt so creative. I think that’s inspiring. For me fashion had become too narrow. Everything had to be so fucking luxurious, and the whole creative and expressive part disappeared.

There is something intrinsically Swedish about Acne that I can’t put my finger on. Can you explain?
I am Swedish! I think that our clothing is functional and related to architecture. It is graphic, but I wouldn’t say it's minimal, which people often say it is. Maybe it's a lack of growing up with couture and extravagance. We had this plan from the start that everyone is on this journey and we know that we’re not perfect and next season we might be more or less interesting. We accept things as imperfect, we almost treasure it. I don’t think people take us too seriously.

Really, even now?
It's only clothing, you know. If you try to keep up with all the amazing and creative people you'll lose your personality, your focus and your ability to find something a little bit personal.

So there's no master plan?
Our plan is to work with people we like and admire. Acne is built on other people. I feel the spirit of everyone I work with. Now we are designing furniture, and for me it's so much fun! Few people have the luxury of trying out different disciplines. If I worked for a big house, it wouldn’t be appropriate to try out different things as there would be a heritage to respect.

Or maybe you get bored easily.
It might be a bit of that.

How do you see the company growing? You mentioned perfume earlier. Will we see that soon?
I am really interested in it, but I think those kinds of brand extensions feel very commercial, so we’re not doing perfume for now. We have lots of other projects lined up that I’m really excited about, but we are taking things slowly. I don’t want Acne to be super mega and absolutely everywhere. In the end, people will find you.

I think Acne has changed the price people expect to pay for quality.
If we’ve done that then I am very proud, especially if they are buying pieces that they are going to wear for a long time.

Do people shop differently from country to country?
In some places. New York is made up of different societies—Chelsea, Brooklyn, the Village, etc—and I don’t think we have reached all of those groups yet. But everywhere we are, we are attracting a really diverse community. That means that we are doing something right.

When is London getting its Acne store?
We’d really like to do that, but we need to find a location. A while ago we were thinking about Mount Street [in Mayfair]. But now when I go there, there doesn’t seem to be anyone walking around. Everyone is in Scott’s restaurant. That’s the only place on the street that's always busy!

You were in bands for a number of years. Do you still play guitar?
Yes, of course. Music is meditation for me. If I’m tired or really excited about something I’ll go to my cellar and play music for hours and hours.

What are you listening to at the moment?
I’m sorry, I have been listening to Metallica. I just really like their latest album. I bought a drum set and that is why I’m listening to them, to practice.

Is there anything you wish you had done differently?
Definitely. I wish I had known more when I started. It sounds sad, but I still wish I had had a fashion education. Of course, there is strength in not coming from a fashion background, but at the same time I am missing some skills.

It’s never too late to go back to school, Jonny!

We just can't put a target market on this piece; everybody loves it. The blend of lambswool and mohair produce a soft and warming cardigan that drops nicely below the waist. The buttons are nice and chunky as well as having leather elbow patches on the back to really top this off. Jeans, chinos, formal... don't worry. It looks amazing with everything.

Selecting brands is tough enough, but when somebody like Common Projects comes along, they make it twice as hard. Every piece in their collection is beautiful: the production, the materials, the shape, the comfort, the minimal branding... I could go on all day. We had to be selective and it looks like we made a good decision as they've been flying out of the store recently all over Europe. Selectism has just featured the infamous Desert Boot [the one Kanye and Beckham made famous] in their lookbook:

These boots sit amazingly between streetwear and something more clean cut. They look great whether you've got some nice denim or a pair of chinos. Like I say, they're flying out of the store, so if you've got your eye on some, pick them up quick at Ideology Online Store.

Veja: fair trade footwear

Is another world possible? Veja believe it is and thats why they built their company around these three principles:

1. To use purely ecological inputs

2. To use fair trade cotton and latex

3. To respect worker's dignity

These guys feel that the era of good will and nice speeches is over and now is an era of action over intentions from which Veja has created a global chain that emphasizes solidarity and environment from the small producers in Brazil to the public.

Veja sneakers are made with organic cotton and natural latex sourced from Amazonia. The canvas used to make their sneakers is organic cotton which comes from a cooperative of small producers in the Northeast regions of Brazil where cotton and food crop is exploited without manure or pesticides. On top of this, they produce all trainer soles from wild latex produced by Amazonian Hevea trees. The Amazon Jungle is the only place on Earth where this tree grows in a totally wild state. Using this is a small step to preventing deforestation.

Our understanding of ecological clothing ends at 100% hemp, tie dye tee shirts and vegan sandals, but Veja sneakers couldn't be further from this preconception. Understated, comfortable and modest, these are great trainers for city cycling or just a stroll around the town.

'How to Make A Perfect Cup of Tea', George Orwell's thoughts

If you look up 'tea' in the first cookery book that comes to hand you will probably find that it is unmentioned; or at most you will find a few lines of sketchy instructions which give no ruling on several of the most important points.

This is curious, not only because tea is one of the main stays of civilization in this country, as well as in Eire, Australia and New Zealand, but because the best manner of making it is the subject of violent disputes.

When I look through my own recipe for the perfect cup of tea, I find no fewer than eleven outstanding points. On perhaps two of them there would be pretty general agreement, but at least four others are acutely controversial. Here are my own eleven rules, every one of which I regard as golden:

First of all, one should use Indian or Ceylonese tea. China tea has virtues which are not to be despised nowadays — it is economical, and one can drink it without milk — but there is not much stimulation in it. One does not feel wiser, braver or more optimistic after drinking it. Anyone who has used that comforting phrase 'a nice cup of tea' invariably means Indian tea.
Secondly, tea should be made in small quantities — that is, in a teapot. Tea out of an urn is always tasteless, while army tea, made in a cauldron, tastes of grease and whitewash. The teapot should be made of china or earthenware. Silver or Britanniaware teapots produce inferior tea and enamel pots are worse; though curiously enough a pewter teapot (a rarity nowadays) is not so bad.
Thirdly, the pot should be warmed beforehand. This is better done by placing it on the hob than by the usual method of swilling it out with hot water.
Fourthly, the tea should be strong. For a pot holding a quart, if you are going to fill it nearly to the brim, six heaped teaspoons would be about right. In a time of rationing, this is not an idea that can be realized on every day of the week, but I maintain that one strong cup of tea is better than twenty weak ones. All true tea lovers not only like their tea strong, but like it a little stronger with each year that passes — a fact which is recognized in the extra ration issued to old-age pensioners.
Fifthly, the tea should be put straight into the pot. No strainers, muslin bags or other devices to imprison the tea. In some countries teapots are fitted with little dangling baskets under the spout to catch the stray leaves, which are supposed to be harmful. Actually one can swallow tea-leaves in considerable quantities without ill effect, and if the tea is not loose in the pot it never infuses properly.
Sixthly, one should take the teapot to the kettle and not the other way about. The water should be actually boiling at the moment of impact, which means that one should keep it on the flame while one pours. Some people add that one should only use water that has been freshly brought to the boil, but I have never noticed that it makes any difference.
Seventhly, after making the tea, one should stir it, or better, give the pot a good shake, afterwards allowing the leaves to settle.
Eighthly, one should drink out of a good breakfast cup — that is, the cylindrical type of cup, not the flat, shallow type. The breakfast cup holds more, and with the other kind one's tea is always half cold before one has well started on it.
Ninthly, one should pour the cream off the milk before using it for tea. Milk that is too creamy always gives tea a sickly taste.
Tenthly, one should pour tea into the cup first. This is one of the most controversial points of all; indeed in every family in Britain there are probably two schools of thought on the subject. The milk-first school can bring forward some fairly strong arguments, but I maintain that my own argument is unanswerable. This is that, by putting the tea in first and stirring as one pours, one can exactly regulate the amount of milk whereas one is liable to put in too much milk if one does it the other way round.
Lastly, tea — unless one is drinking it in the Russian style — should be drunk without sugar. I know very well that I am in a minority here. But still, how can you call yourself a true tealover if you destroy the flavour of your tea by putting sugar in it? It would be equally reasonable to put in pepper or salt. Tea is meant to be bitter, just as beer is meant to be bitter. If you sweeten it, you are no longer tasting the tea, you are merely tasting the sugar; you could make a very similar drink by dissolving sugar in plain hot water.

Some people would answer that they don't like tea in itself, that they only drink it in order to be warmed and stimulated, and they need sugar to take the taste away. To those misguided people I would say: Try drinking tea without sugar for, say, a fortnight and it is very unlikely that you will ever want to ruin your tea by sweetening it again.

These are not the only controversial points to arise in connexion with tea drinking, but they are sufficient to show how subtilized the whole business has become. There is also the mysterious social etiquette surrounding the teapot (why is it considered vulgar to drink out of your saucer, for instance?) and much might be written about the subsidiary uses of tealeaves, such as telling fortunes, predicting the arrival of visitors, feeding rabbits, healing burns and sweeping the carpet. It is worth paying attention to such details as warming the pot and using water that is really boiling, so as to make quite sure of wringing out of one's ration the twenty good, strong cups of that two ounces, properly handled, ought to represent.

A Man's Manual

In an attempt to take men back to their primitive responsibilities in a world where everything is served up to us on a plate and we no longer have the tools to facilitate daily needs and activities, a couple of friends of mine have started a new blog.

Its a manual for men, in an attempt to reconnect us with our knowledge to build, grow and produce stuff: carpentry, growing vegetables, fishing, butchery, making and knowing about beer and whiskey, carving the roast, car maintenance, plumbing and beekeeping as well as general good style and etiquette.

I'll also be offering a few thoughts of my own over there.

Surface2Air

You may have no idea about it but over the past few years, you will have come across Surface To Air. They are responsible for some of the most creative mainstream projects of the past few years. It started out as a lot of good things do, in Paris, amongst friends who just wanted to organise projects they enjoyed and has since then evolved into a multidisciplinary collective (company?) spanning across the entire creative spectrum through fashion, graphics, photography and multimedia.

Surface to Air's studios are now part creative direction agency and part clothing company. Some of their more recognised works include music videos for fellow Parisian's Justice and electrofunk duo Chromeo as well as art directing the Blason shoot for Pharrell's line of jewellery for Louis Vuitton, and commercials for Diesel and Sony. More recently however, they have linked up with Kings of Leon to produce a capsule clothing collection as well as being the main driving force behind UNIQLO's emergence in France.

As well as being famous for milling with some of the biggest names in arts and music, these guys have become widely recognised for their repinterpretations of classic and technical garb: beautiful and delicately tailored shirting, calf leather bags and graphic print tees made from the best cotton and not forgetting their leather jackets are some of the best pieces available from them at the moment.

What I want people to know about Surface To Air is we do whatever we want and that you [can do that] and do it successfully. You do not need to be specialized to do something.

My day-to-day consists of the same as a firefighter.

I know something is a big idea when everybody talks about it…in our office

My approach to creative direction is let’s do it and we’ll see. It is quite hard to analyze more. But I like: epic, poetic, erotic, destruction, brutalism, nature.

The project I’m most proud of is Surface To Air in general because it is the project of all projects. The whole idea of S2A is to be able to jump from one project to the other with a refreshed mind that you would not have if you’d always worked in the same field. That’s the basis of our originality I guess

What I love about the Surface To Air clothing line is it is made by us and for us. It is a mix of all our geographic and social origins. The S2A team gathers more than 14 nationalities.

You can usually find me wearing boots, jeans and buttoned up shirt.

Our brand has always had part of its roots in the States. It is more than time for us to come there with a proper project we have always found an amazing support there in NY or LA.

The best part about my job is that it changes every minute. The worst part about my job is that it changes every minute

I really admire people who have 3 kids because 2 is quite tough already.

Werner Herzog really inspires me.

Outside of work you can find me working.

The most important thing I’ve learned thus far is listen to everyone but do not take in account what they say.

My hopes for 2010 are for Surface To Air to build 2011 properly.

Critical mass, Sheffield

Started in San Francisco, but now happening in over 300 cities around the globe, Critical Mass is a bicycle event held on the last friday of every month. Founded in 1992, the ride was originally to demonstrate how unfriendly the city was to cyclists, but the leaderless structure of Critical Mass makes it impossible to assign it to any one specific goal. To be honest, I don't think the purpose of it is any more formalized than the meeting in a set location and time and travelling through the city streets to celebrate the bike and its relationship with the urban context and the bicycle as the most efficient, peaceful and perfect mode of transport.

Join us (at 6PM outside the Town Hall on the last Friday of every month) for a monthly cycle ride in the city. Bring someone you know who's got a bike; bring EVERYONE you know who's got a bike; make some flyers and go around Sheffield sticking them on bikes or giving them to cyclists; speak to the person next to you at the traffic lights and tell them about it; do whatever you think will make more people come; come YOURSELF.

This isn't a protest, its a celebration.

Article is a printed magazine, with 1000 copies a month circulated in Sheffield.

Sheffield is a city with a difference. Sheffield is edgy, creative, friendly and ugly. Its a city that has soul. Article Magazine is a monthly publication with a print circulation of 1000 that offers people a guide to the space they're in. Its a magazine that talks about the city and places they love, and what makes them special: the building, the people, the streets. A brochure for the constantly evolving fabric of Sheffield, like an exhibition brochure, the magazine offers a wide variety of features from bikes to Obama to gay geography. Thinking, writing, publishing and doing, these guys present stories of the city around us, from architectural analysis to personal tales of strange subscultures to interviews with people who make things. The thing that I love about the magazine is its celebration of the real world, a celebration of our city's ugliness and a celebration of the normal everyday.

2009 Prix Pictet first prize: Nadav Kander

It is not fresh news that the demand we [humans] are putting on our Earth is out of its depth. The ecosystems we depend on already suffer resource demands beyond their capability. Reports are showing us the results are devastating: international foot riots, desertification and loss of forest cover. With an ever growing population, the governments are trying to stimulate growth, but can our living systems really sustain the future consumption patterns of a further three billion people with 40 years?

Or are we making the transition, as the Nobel laureate Paul Crutzen has suggested, to a point where the face of the earth – its soil, its waters, its groves, its hollows – is no longer natural, but bears the terminal scars of man’s intervention.

The Prix Pictet claims to be the world's first art prize dedicated to artists that use to photography to convey crucial messages regarding sustainability. It has a simple goal, and that is to portray crucial messages about social and environmental threats of the forseeable future, using art as its medium to target a wider global audience. Impurity, excess, contamination, absence, control: these werethe aspects of sustainability on the theme of Water covered by photographers nominated for last year’s Prix Pictet. This year the theme was Earth.

This year's first prize went to London based artist Nadav Kander. His work appears regularly in publications such as The Sunday Time Magazine, Another Man and Dazed & Confused. Here are a couple more images from his entry:

At Ideology, not only are we great fans of cycling, but we appreciate things of sheer beauty and whether you're an advocator of the vogue city transport around the world at the moment or not you would struggle to deny the simplistic beauty of the bicycles at Bertelli Biciclette Assemblate NYC. These bikes are assembled, finished and tuned by the fine hands of Francesco from a combination of brand new parts, "new old stock" and vintage parts he picks up at flea markets, old bikeshops, collectors and from his trustworthy suppliers.

Our favourite ride of his right now is the Domenica: this is the bike for a sunny sunday morning ride, with the newspaper or some Murakami under your arm, on your way to your favourite suburban Italian deli... thats how it is in my head anyway.

How could I not start my description by mentioning the Adam Brackney special design wooden handlebar? The perfect icing on this beautiful cake. Viking frame, Brooks (keeping it British) B15 saddle, vintage white Michelin tires and a vintage Gipiemme crankset turning a gold finished chainring.

Design Classic #1: APC New Standard

Jonathan Glancey, architecture critic for the Guardian, last year began writing a series of short articles called 'classics of every day design'. Writing around fifty articles, including products such as the moleskine notepads, the illycafe jars and Robin Day's polyprop chair amongst other products which surround us but don't 'swank around in style magazines' and which we unforgivably take for granted. We intend on publishing a few design classics of our own; timeless pieces from architecture, product design, the great outdoors, architecture and beyond.

Our first product is the APC New Standard. As a brand, APC needs little introduction. Adopting a very Miesian 'Less is more' approach to their clothing which seems to have been lost in time, althought certainly still appreciated, geared towards essential wardrobe needs. Much like the New Standard, the creator - Tunisian born Jean Touitou's thoughts about the clothing industry are direct and to the point. Practically unchanged in two decades of production, the New Standard is a unisex jean made from raw selvage denim that can't help fitting everybody with unrivaled precision. They epitomise utilitarian design - there is nothing superfluous, no external branding (excusing the neatly attached APC pin and the top fly button which is engraved engraved 'APC, Paris pres de Luxembourg') but most importantly no gimmicky washes, paint splatters or uniform holes. Yes, these jeans require commitment, they represent an everyday narrative that is unique to every pair. A new pair will hold you hostage; they're hard, unwashed and stiff. It is widely recommended amongst jean connoiseurs to buy 2-3 sizes down and then wear the denim in for 6-12 months without a wash.

I've only been wearing my jeans for 3 months now and they're still unwashed. They've definitely loosened up and are beginning to show some beautiful fading in all the places I wanted. As an avid cyclist, the crotch has a saddle shape fade and the backpockets shadowing the shape of my wallet, not to mention the countless number of handrails I have slid down over the past 90 days.

I often feel that a sign of great design is a product, system or idea that transcends and outlives fashion and the New Standard has done it for the past twenty years. A great pair of jeans will get better with age, with every action you make, and every time you fall. We haven't seen anybody look good in a pair of flared cords recently but a classic pair of jeans never go out of style.
